What is HEMA?

HEMA, or 2-Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate, is a common ingredient in different types of nail products, particularly in gel and acrylic nails.  However, some individuals may develop an allergic reaction to HEMA, leading to what's known as HEMA nail allergy.

Symptoms of HEMA nail allergy can include:

  1. Redness and Swelling: The skin around the nails may become red and swollen.

  2. Itching: Itching or a burning sensation on or around the nails.

  3. Blistering: In severe cases, painful blistering and cracking of the skin.

  4. Rash: A rash can develop on the fingers, hands and arms.

  5. Peeling Skin: The skin on the hands and fingers may start to flake and peel.

  6. Swollen Eyes: Nail dust from filing can affect the eyes and cause swelling.

  7. Flu Like Symptoms: Runny nose, sneezing and itchy eyes.

It's important to note, that an allergy to HEMA or other nail product ingredients can develop over time with repeated exposure. Individuals who work in the nail industry or frequently use gel or acrylic nails may be more prone to developing these allergies.

If you think you many have developed a HEMA nail allergy, it's recommended to:

  1. Stop Using the Product: Discontinue the use of any nail products containing HEMA.

  2. Seek Medical Advice: If you experience persistent or severe symptoms, consult with a dermatologist or healthcare professional for proper diagnosis and treatment.

  3. Patch Testing: A patch test can be conducted by a dermatologist to identify specific allergens causing the reaction.

  4. Use HEMA Free Products: Consider using HEMA Free nail products that are formulated to minimize the risk of allergic reactions.

It's essential to check the ingredients in nail products and be cautious if you have a history of skin sensitivities or allergies. If you experience any adverse reactions, seeking professional advice is crucial to determine the cause and receive appropriate care.
